How to Choose a Responsible Dog Breeder
Choosing the right breeder is every bit as important as choosing the right puppy. A responsible breeder should care deeply about the health, temperament and welfare of their dogs and should be just as interested in finding the right home for their puppies as you are in finding the right puppy.
Look at the Breeder, Not Just the Puppy
It is very easy to fall in love with a beautiful puppy, but take time to look at the breeder behind that puppy too. Ask how long they have been breeding, how their dogs live and why they chose to breed the litter. A good breeder should be open, knowledgeable and happy to answer your questions.
Ask About Health Testing
Responsible breeding begins before a litter is even conceived. Ask which health tests have been carried out on both parents and whether you can see the results. The appropriate tests vary from breed to breed, and a responsible breeder should be able to explain which tests are relevant and why they matter.
Meet the Mother
You should normally be able to meet the puppy’s mother and see her with her puppies. She should appear happy, healthy and comfortable in her surroundings. Her temperament matters too, because it can give you an indication of some of the qualities her puppies may inherit.
Find Out How the Puppies Are Raised
The first weeks of a puppy’s life are incredibly important. Ask where the puppies are raised and what they experience before leaving for their new homes. Gentle handling, everyday household sounds, human interaction and appropriate early socialisation all help puppies develop into confident, well-adjusted companions.
A Good Breeder Will Ask You Questions Too
Don't be surprised if the breeder asks plenty of questions about you, your family, your home and your lifestyle. Responsible breeders want to know where their puppies are going and whether the breed — and the individual puppy — will be right for you. Finding the right home should matter enormously to them.
Never Feel Pressured
You should never feel rushed into paying a deposit or making a decision before you are ready. Take your time, ask questions and trust your instincts. A responsible breeder will want you to feel completely comfortable and confident about your decision.
Support Shouldn't End When the Puppy Leaves
A responsible breeder's interest in their puppies should not end on collection day. They should be willing to offer advice and support throughout the dog's life and genuinely want to hear how their puppies are getting on.
At Chezza’s, finding the right home for each puppy has always been incredibly important to me. I want my puppies to become much-loved family companions, and I am always happy to talk openly with prospective owners, answer their questions and help them decide whether a Chezza’s puppy is truly right for them
